The chance to be a Cinderella story draws closer for ETSU Men’s basketball.
After winning their conference tournament and sealing an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, the team will tune into the “Selection Show” to find out who, when and where they play. ETSU will likely go into the tournament as a 13 or 14 seed. That means to advance in the tournament, the Bucs will have to pull off an upset against their first round opponent yet to be determined.
The Bucs have done it before.
Their first win in the tournament came in the 1967-68 season with a win over Florida State. They lost to Ohio State by 7 in the next round.
In 1992-92, the 14th seeded Bucs beat 3rd seeded Arizona. They would go on to lose to Michigan’s “Fab Five” in the second round.
ETSU has been to the NCAA Tournament 10 times. The highest they have ever been seeded is 10 in the 1990-91 season. ETSU’s record in the NCAA Tournament is 2-10, however, they have played a lot of teams close in those losses.
ETSU finished the season 27-7 including the Southern Conference Tournament and 14-4 in conference regular season play. That placed ETSU at 8th in the Mid-Major Polls as of March 6, 2017. It has been since the 2009-2010 season since ETSU has been to the NCAA Tournament.
The Bucs are hosting a “Selection Show” party at the Millennium Center that starts at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. Anyone can attend. Head coach Steve Forbes and the players will be there to see who they are matched up with in the tournament.
